Costumed ball Garden of Eden scene in "Can! Can!" Can! Can! play - Costumed Ball Scene Photo
Costume design and sewing for two of Jewish Community Center - Centre Stage's major stage productions.

"Can! Can!" - I did drawings for all of the costumes, but was given the Garden of Eden costumed ball scene as my own to design and sew. They thought the drawings were good enough that they posted them all in the lobby for the run of the play.

The drawings for "Can! Can!" were done long before the cast was chosen. As a result, in the interests of speed, I used the same faces and bodies for all the drawing because I had no idea who would be playing which part. Not all of the costumes were used. You'll notice I ended up doing front, back and side views of some.

"Majority of One" - the japanese costumes received rave reviews - (unfortunately I have no photos). What was fun about this one, was that I used some old upholstery fabric and magic marker to create the "especially authentic looking" Japanese kimonos for the leading lady and her houseboy. The trick with costuming is NOT TO GET TOO DETAILED as detail get's lost when seen from the distance of an audience.

"Our Town" - I designed and painted the marques and the art for the program covers

Of course, Pistache got the peacock costume for the costumed ball. I wanted to add a gauzy skirt to many of the costumes to better fit with the period of the play, but the director said no.

The "tail" has a wire base and was white curtain gauze colored with magic markers, sequins and glitter feathers. We had to attach it both at her waist AND at the neck to keep it upright and in place.

She could barely sit in the costume and kept bumping it into things!

"Eve" wore a flesh colored leotard with leaves sewn in strategic places. We ended up getting rid of some of the tails as well.

The sequin seahorse turned out so heavy that the actress chosen had to be taller with a strong neck.

Those bee wings were a pain! They wouldn't stay up!

Also, the budget didn't run to sequins for some of the costumes as the drawings indicate. Besides which, dancing in sequins can be hazardous to the skin!

The snake costume was actually worn by a male dancer - which they had a lot of trouble casting. They weren't sure they could find one to fit the part. So I drew the snake costume with a female in mind.
